FPIN Clinical Inquiry Author Expectations & Requirements
The CI project is very rigorous. It is designed for faculty with protected time for writing. Faculty interested in writing a CI, must first successfully write and publish two HelpDesk Answers before beginning a CI. Residents are generally not allowed to write CIs. An exception can be made if the resident has a co-author mentor who has completed 2 or more CIs.
- I am a clinician who is active in clinical care of patients. (Physicians, psychologists, Pharm, D's, etc.)
- I have already completed a Clinical Inquiry OR I am skilled at searching, critical appraisal of original research and writing OR I will work with an FPIN co-author mentor who has these skills.
- I understand that I am expected to do a critical appraisal of all relevant studies, systematic reviews, guidelines, etc, and indicate a) the Level of Evidence, and b) the Grade of Recommendation using the Centre for Evidence Based Medicine criteria.
- I understand that FPIN editors and peer reviewers will rigorously critique both my interpretations and writing style until the FPIN editor in charge approves my manuscript for submission to the publisher.
- I release all copyright claims to FPIN and understand that I will have unlimited use of my manuscript for non-commercial teaching or research purposes.
- I understand that an trained FPIN medical librarian will conduct a rigorous, standardized search to ensure the quality and thoroughness of literature identification.
- I agree to communicate closely with the librarian assigned to my Clinical Inquiry, to engage in dialogue about the search strategy and search results to insure that the best available evidence and authoritative recommendations have been identified in the search.
- I agree that the FPIN medical librarian assigned to my manuscript will also be listed as a co-author on the Clinical Inquiry.
- I understand that it is critical that I complete my manuscript and make revisions by the agreed upon due dates.
- I understand that there will be additional revisions I will need to make following submission and before acceptance for publication.
- I understand that the FPIN editors will make every effort to ensure that my manuscript will be accepted for publication, but publication is not guaranteed.
- I understand that peer review is an essential process for improving the quality of answers, and that along with authorship comes the responsibility of peer reviewing for other authors.
- I agree to peer review a minimum of two Clinical Inquiries in the next year.
- I understand that I will be asked to review new research and recommendations and update my Clinical Inquiry as needed so that it remains current and relevant. The FPIN editorial staff will alert you to new material potentially related to your Clinical Inquiry.
- I have no conflict of interests and will report possible conflicts to the managing editor.
