What is it about the FPIN mission that had you want to participate in the organization?

As an FPIN editor I like to help authors review current medical research, evaluate its quality, and synthesize relevant findings into practical, evidence-informed recommendations for primary care clinicians. I enjoy working closely with the FPIN managerial staff to ensure the manuscripts are clear, concise, and published in a timely manner. To date I have edited or helped author 68 articles in MEDLINE-indexed journals. Along the way I have learned a tremendous amount about research design, medical statistics, and technical writing. I firmly believe in lifelong learning, and teaching and helping others is the best way to continue to educate myself.

All of the staff, authors, and editors at FPIN are wonderful people who are 100% committed to educating primary care clinicians. We have a fantastic team and I feel honored to be a member!

What goals do you have for your respective FPIN project?

Most clinicians I know want to practice the best medicine possible, but they lack the time, skills, or tools to be sure their decisions are grounded in scientific fact. Of the many problems we face in healthcare today, I am most intrigued by solving discrepancies I see between what we know from medical science, and the reality of what physicians do. I want to use the teaching, writing, technical, and analytical skills I have developed over the past 25 years to help other clinicians bridge the gap between medical knowledge and practical patient care. I believe the Clinical Inquiries and HelpDesk Answer series are two of the best ways to accomplish this.

What is your philosophy as an Editor?

When writing and editing, I like to work collaboratively with others. I appreciate the contributions made by others and I respect everyone’s opinion. I try to stick with factual information, and to back up my recommendations with information from respected sources.

“Knowledge is of two kinds. We know a subject ourselves, or we know where we can find information upon it.” -Samuel Johnson

“Curiosity is one of the permanent and certain characteristics of a vigorous intellect.” -Samuel Johnson

“Sir, a desire of knowledge is the natural feeling of mankind; and every human being, whose mind is not debauched, will be willing to give all that he has, to get knowledge.” -Samuel Johnson

“This is the true joy in life, the being used for a purpose recognized by yourself as a mighty one; the being thoroughly worn out before you are thrown on the scrap heap; the being a force of Nature instead of a feverish selfish little clod of ailments and grievances complaining that the world will not devote itself to making you happy.” -George Bernard Shaw
